Gathaithi Farmers’ Cooperative Society

The Gathaithi Farmers’ Cooperative Society, established under the cooperative society act of 2000, unites 1,656 active farmers in the renowned coffee-growing region of Nyeri County, Kenya. Located in Gaki, between the majestic Mt. Kenya and the Aberdare ranges, the cooperative benefits from an ideal environment that supports coffee cultivation, with nutrient-rich red volcanic soil and cool temperatures ranging from 16 to 26°C. Gathaithi’s unique location, 1,720 meters above sea level, allows it to produce high-quality coffee that truly reflects the terroir of this lush region.

Gathaithi farmers grow a blend of SL 28, SL 34, Ruiru 11, and Batian varieties, carefully hand-harvesting cherries twice a year during distinct cropping seasons. The “late crop,” which runs from September to January, contributes to 70% of the annual yield, while the “early crop” from April to July accounts for the remaining 30%. This careful timing ensures each harvest reaches peak ripeness.

Upon harvest, cherries are delivered to the Gathaithi Coffee Factory, where only the finest cherries are selected. After pulping, the coffee undergoes an overnight fermentation process to develop its complex flavors. The beans are then washed, soaked, and dried on raised tables for 7-15 days, depending on climate conditions. Continuous hand-turning and sorting ensure that every lot meets the cooperative’s high standards.
